Keir Starmer is facing renewed criticism for his controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson as the US ambassador. Recent disclosures reveal that despite failing security vetting, Mandelson was still appointed, leading to a crisis in Downing Street.
A source from No10 expressed the Prime Minister’s anger over the situation, highlighting that Foreign Office officials went against a vetting agency’s decision to allow Mandelson to assume the role without informing the PM. Consequently, Sir Olly Robbins was dismissed due to the loss of confidence in him.
Starmer initiated an investigation upon discovering that Mandelson was initially denied security clearance in January 2025 after undergoing a rigorous background check. The revelation came to light as officials sifted through the extensive documents related to Mandelson’s appointment, which were made public following pressure from MPs.
The blame game ensued, with Downing Street attributing the decision to the Foreign Office, while the Foreign Office pledged to swiftly ascertain the facts behind overruling security officials. Starmer expressed his dismay at not being informed of Mandelson’s failed vetting and vowed to provide full transparency before Parliament.
The situation poses challenges for sacked Foreign Office official Oliver Robbins and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, with Starmer expected to address Parliament and face tough questioning. The PM must clarify that due process was followed amid concerns of misleading statements similar to Boris Johnson’s Partygate denials.
Opposition parties are calling for accountability, with doubts raised over the PM’s credibility and calls for resignations. Starmer’s leadership is further scrutinized as he navigates the fallout from the Mandelson controversy, following his handling of the Iran crisis.
Despite regrets over Mandelson’s appointment due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein, Starmer managed to stabilize the situation temporarily. However, the lingering repercussions of the Mandelson saga continue to challenge the PM’s credibility.
