Keir Starmer has criticized Israel for conducting extensive airstrikes on Lebanon, expressing concerns about the fragile Iran-US ceasefire being at risk.
The Prime Minister denounced Tel Aviv’s ongoing bombardment as inappropriate, particularly as doubts surfaced regarding the continuity of Donald Trump’s bombing operations. Starmer acknowledged the complexity of determining whether the strikes violate the ceasefire but emphasized the imperative need for their cessation.
Following the ceasefire declaration, Israel escalated its attacks on Hezbollah, an Iran-supported militant group in Lebanon, asserting that it fell outside the ceasefire terms. However, Iran has accused Tel Aviv of breaching the agreement.
Starmer also rebuked Donald Trump for his aggressive remarks against Tehran and his advocacy for the destruction of Iranian civilization. Emphasizing his adherence to British values, Starmer highlighted the disparity between his approach and Trump’s rhetoric.
During his visit to the Middle East, Starmer engaged with allies in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. These Gulf nations have faced retaliatory strikes from Iran following the US-Israeli military actions, involving numerous Iranian missiles and drones targeting American military installations and energy facilities.
Regarding Israel’s attacks on Lebanon potentially violating the ceasefire, Starmer emphasized the moral standpoint, stressing the importance of adhering to principles and ensuring inclusivity within the ceasefire agreement.
Starmer assured that the UK closely monitors the utilization of its bases by the US, affirming that they are strictly designated for collective self-defense purposes. He reiterated the UK’s commitment to upholding clear principles, preventing offensive actions, and safeguarding the neutrality of its bases.
Addressing the disruption in the vital shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz, Starmer emphasized the necessity for unimpeded passage for ships, particularly amid uncertainties surrounding the waterway’s status post-conflict.
After meetings with regional leaders, Starmer underscored the significance of securing a lasting ceasefire and ensuring the unrestricted navigation of the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the need for concrete actions beyond mere rhetoric.
Starmer also highlighted the imperative of not returning to the status quo post-Iran crisis, advocating for substantial changes to address longstanding issues that have persisted despite previous crises.
Yvette Cooper echoed the sentiment, cautioning against Iran’s potential imposition of tolls in the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the international legal framework governing transit routes and the need for adherence to established conventions.
Additionally, the Foreign Secretary warned of the destabilizing impact of Israel’s offensive in Lebanon on the broader region, calling for Lebanon’s inclusion in the ceasefire to prevent further escalation and promote regional stability.
