Anthony Joshua’s driver in Nigeria is expected to face charges of ‘reckless driving’ following a tragic crash that resulted in the deaths of two of the boxer’s close associates. The 47-year-old driver, a key member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, is set to be formally charged within the next 48 hours, as reported by The Daily Mail.
After being discharged from a hospital in Lagos on New Year’s Eve, the driver was taken to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state, where the fatal accident occurred. He underwent hours of questioning and provided an official statement detailing the events leading up to the crash, which claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele, two of Joshua’s dear friends.
Joshua, who was also released from the hospital, paid his respects to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home before their repatriation to the UK. The driver, after receiving treatment for minor injuries, was taken to the state police headquarters for interrogation. A police source mentioned that a decision on charging the driver for reckless driving is expected within 48 hours, with a potential court appearance on Friday.
The incident involved Joshua traveling in a black Lexus Jeep that collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The driver of the truck, who fled the scene, has been declared wanted by the police. The preliminary investigation indicated overspeeding by the SUV carrying Joshua, leading to a burst front tire and loss of control before the collision with the truck.
Eddie Hearn, chairman of Joshua’s promotional company Matchroom, expressed condolences for the loss of Ghami and Ayodele. Sky has announced a price reduction for its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle, offering substantial savings and a wide array of live matches for the upcoming season, including over 1,400 matches across various leagues. Sky is set to broadcast at least 215 live Premier League games next season, a significant increase from previous seasons.
