Vatican Criticizes Trump and Vance on Just War Theory

Date:

The Vatican has strongly criticized Donald Trump and JD Vance for their views on the “just war” theory, cautioning that the concept was developed in a time before modern warfare technologies like drones.

Andrea Tornielli, the Vatican’s editorial director, highlighted the evolution of the “just war” doctrine over the centuries, acknowledging the growing challenge of justifying its relevance in contemporary conflicts dominated by advanced weaponry.

This response follows JD Vance’s defense of the longstanding tradition of just war theory against Pope Leo’s assertion that God does not support warfare. Vance, speaking at an event, emphasized the existence of ongoing debates regarding the moral justification of specific conflicts.

Donald Trump’s criticism of Pope Leo as “weak on crime” and his unfavorable stance on foreign policy in response to the pontiff’s comments about the US-Israeli war on Iran prompted these discussions.

Tornielli emphasized the ethical dilemmas posed by modern warfare, noting the increasing recognition that war is not necessarily a viable solution to conflicts. US Cardinal Robert McElroy also weighed in, stating that the US-Israeli campaign in Iran did not meet the moral criteria for a just war.

Vance questioned the notion that God opposes those who engage in warfare, citing historical examples such as the liberation of France and concentration camp prisoners by US troops. He stressed the importance of theological accuracy in discussions and expected similar rigor from religious leaders.

The ongoing debate underscores the complex moral considerations inherent in contemporary warfare, as highlighted by Vatican officials and US religious leaders.
