“David Lammy Introduces Digital System to Prevent Wrongful Releases”

Date:

David Lammy has denounced the wrongful release of 179 prisoners in the past year as “unacceptable” and has pledged to modernize the outdated prison system. As the Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary, Mr. Lammy introduced a new Justice ID system that will digitally track individuals entering the prison system from arrest to release. This system will utilize biometric technology like fingerprints and facial scans to verify identities at crucial stages, including release from custody, with an £82 million commitment to reduce errors.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) highlighted the need for this reform, citing the current system as shockingly outdated, allowing criminals to use multiple aliases that result in confusion and wrongful releases. Dame Lynne Owens, in an independent review of erroneous prisoner releases, emphasized that the issue reflects a broken system. The review was prompted by the case of Hadush Kebatu, a deported migrant mistakenly freed and involved in criminal activities in Epping, Essex.

Dame Lynne’s report revealed flaws in the communication and paperwork processes at HMP Chelmsford, leading to Kebatu’s release despite clear indications to the contrary. She stressed the importance of notifying victims promptly and emphasized the need for accountability at all levels of decision-making. The data from the MoJ further illustrated the extent of the issue, with 179 inmates wrongly released due to various errors.

In response to Dame Lynne’s findings, Mr. Lammy acknowledged the systemic failures resulting from years of neglect and overcrowding in prisons and courts. He emphasized the ongoing efforts to modernize the system, including the implementation of biometrics and the Justice ID system, along with a significant financial investment to prevent future errors and enhance public safety.

The government’s commitment to addressing these challenges reflects a proactive approach to rectifying longstanding issues within the criminal justice system and ensuring better protection for citizens.
