A severe storm named Therese is wreaking havoc in the Canary Islands, specifically impacting Tenerife and La Palma. Unusual weather conditions have brought heavy rain, 62 mph winds, and even snow in high-altitude areas. Tenerife is facing a state of emergency due to one of the most intense storms the region has seen in over ten years. Spain’s meteorological agency, AEMET, has issued alerts that will remain active over the weekend, with high-risk orange warnings for northern Tenerife and parts of La Palma due to strong winds and heavy rainfall.
Across all seven islands, yellow warnings are in place for rain, thunderstorms, and rough seas with waves up to 20 feet high. Mount Teide and nearby peaks have experienced significant snowfall, an uncommon occurrence for this time of year.
The extreme weather conditions have prompted many Tenerife tourists to express their eagerness to return home. A TikTok user, known as @theknightstrider1, described the erratic weather patterns in Tenerife, highlighting alternating heavy rain and sunshine within minutes. The storm has led to flight cancellations and disruptions at Tenerife airports, causing chaos for travelers.
Despite the challenges, authorities expect Storm Therese to gradually subside by Monday, March 23, with improving conditions throughout the week. However, wind warnings remain in place for several islands, and some schools will remain closed as a precaution. The situation is being closely monitored as the region works towards recovery.
