A guide specializing in theme parks has shared strategies for avoiding long lines during school breaks.
With the reopening of popular theme parks like Alton Towers, Drayton Manor, and Legoland after seasonal closures, and Thorpe Park welcoming back visitors starting March 27, the upcoming Easter and summer holidays are anticipated to be peak periods for these attractions.
For years, theme parks have been go-to destinations for families seeking entertainment, offering a variety of rides and attractions suitable for all ages. However, dealing with lengthy queues, especially on weekends and during school vacations, can be a hassle.
To assist visitors in circumventing queues, Oliver Brendon, the CEO of AttractionTickets.com, has revealed five expert tips to optimize the theme park experience.
One of Oliver’s recommendations is to plan ahead by identifying and prioritizing the most popular rides and heading to the top choice first thing in the morning, irrespective of its location in the park. This proactive approach can help avoid escalating wait times as the day progresses.
According to the expert, deviating from the usual park map route can be advantageous. By starting at the farthest point and working backward, visitors may encounter shorter lines early in the day when most guests are still near the entrance, allowing them to enjoy major attractions before crowds peak.
Flexibility, particularly for local visitors, can be a game-changer. Monitoring weather forecasts for unexpected sunny spells on initially predicted rainy days can present an opportunity for a quieter park visit, as many guests tend to avoid inclement weather. Additionally, light rain typically does not disrupt most major rides, ensuring a relatively normal park operation.
In case of a crowded day, Oliver suggests utilizing single rider queues, especially for couples, older children, or groups willing to ride separately. These queues are often significantly shorter than the main lines as they help fill empty seats and maintain ride capacity.
Furthermore, choosing the right seat on a ride can significantly impact the experience. For thrill-seekers, the back row of roller coasters typically offers the most exhilarating ride with fast drops and increased airtime, while the front row provides a smoother experience and better views for those seeking a less intense ride.
Oliver also encourages visitors to communicate their seating preferences to ride operators, as they may accommodate requests when possible.
