“Marine Biologist Releases Pet Lobster, Faces Ban”

Date:

In a surprising turn of events, a video captures the impulsive actions of a woman as she removes a live lobster from an upscale fish restaurant and releases it into a harbor. The woman, identified as Emma Smart, believed she was liberating the lobster from being served as a meal, unaware that it was actually a pet lobster used for educating schoolchildren.

The incident took place at the Catch at the Old Fish Market in Weymouth, Dorset. Smart, wearing a colorful jumper, calmly approached the restaurant and proceeded to extract the lobster from a fish tank inside. Despite attempts by restaurant staff to intervene, Smart proceeded to drop the lobster into the water nearby.

The lobster, owned by the restaurant proprietor for educational purposes, had been a resident for two-and-a-half years. Unfortunately, its fate after the incident remains unknown. Smart, a marine biologist with a passion for animal welfare, confessed to causing damage to the lobster and appeared in court where she received a conditional discharge and a three-year ban from the restaurant premises.

The judge emphasized that the lobster was not intended for consumption but for educational purposes. This was not the first time Smart had been involved in an incident at the same restaurant, having previously disrupted the establishment in 2022. Despite her intentions, her actions raised concerns about the well-being of the lobster and its survival post-release.
