A past police officer turned Member of Parliament has strongly criticized the “corrupt” leadership of the organization representing regular officers. Jonathan Hinder from the Labour party shared his challenging experiences from his time on duty, highlighting the disappointment officers face due to the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW). The Federation recently faced turmoil following the arrest of its chief executive, Mukund Krishna, in connection with a fraud probe.
The controversy deepened as it was revealed that Mr. Krishna received a total of £1.4 million in salary and bonuses over a two-year period. Hinder emphasized the necessity for police officers to have the choice to engage with alternative organizations. Minister for Policing, Sarah Jones, affirmed the government’s commitment to doing what is right in this situation.
Hinder recounted poignant moments from his policing career, such as being the first responder to a tragic triple homicide and intervening in various distressing incidents. He shed light on the harsh realities faced by officers beyond just apprehending criminals. Describing policing as a challenging and underappreciated profession, he criticized the current state of the Police Federation’s leadership.
He expressed concerns that the Federation’s 140,000 members feel obliged to maintain their subscriptions due to limited options for representation. Hinder called for a significant transformation within the Federation to ensure effective advocacy for frontline officers. He stressed the need for radical changes to address the ongoing issues within the organization.
Responding to Hinder’s remarks, Minister Jones acknowledged the necessity for change, stating that the current situation is unsustainable. The Federation’s chairwoman, Tiff Lynch, acknowledged the recent difficulties faced by the organization, including a discrimination ruling against officers regarding pension schemes.
Lynch reassured members that the Federation is confronting these challenges directly and has introduced a comprehensive transformation plan to enhance governance, financial stability, and cultural reforms.
