Keir Starmer has reiterated his stance to not be influenced by attempts to involve Britain in the Iran conflict, despite Donald Trump’s recent remarks. The US President, in a heated outburst, implied that the UK and its partners should independently address the issue of the crucial Strait of Hormuz. Trump also suggested a willingness to disengage from the conflict he initiated, even without reaching a peace agreement with Iran.
During a press briefing this morning, Mr. Starmer emphasized that the UK’s response will have long-lasting implications. He announced plans for enhanced collaboration with European nations and disclosed that Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper will lead a meeting of 35 allied countries to strategize on reopening the Strait, potentially involving military measures.

Mr. Starmer remarked, “The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has now progressed into its second month. While efforts are underway to de-escalate tensions and achieve peace, the repercussions of this war will shape our nation’s future.”
He continued, “I want to assure the British public that despite the intensity of this turmoil, we are well-prepared to endure it and have a comprehensive strategy to emerge stronger and more secure as a nation.”
Furthermore, he stated, “I am not willing to subject the British people to another crisis only to return to the status quo afterward. This time around, we will pursue a different path in terms of our economy, energy, and defense. We aim to transform Britain into a fairer and more resilient country because such optimism is crucial for national unity, and our recovery from this crisis will define us for years to come.”
The Government is exploring support packages following the allocation of over £50 million to aid households reliant on oil for heating. While Mr. Starmer has yet to address the impending fuel duty increase in September, he mentioned the consideration of a targeted support program for severely impacted households.
In response to concerns about Trump’s recent suggestion of potential US withdrawal from the NATO alliance, Mr. Starmer affirmed the UK’s steadfast commitment to the organization.
He stated, “NATO stands as the most effective military alliance globally, safeguarding us for numerous decades, and we remain fully dedicated to its mission.”
“Despite external pressures and distractions, I am resolute in acting in the best interests of Britain in the decisions I make. That’s why I have made it unequivocally clear that this conflict is not ours, and we will not be dragged into it.”
