A captain in the Royal Navy has stepped down from commanding a British nuclear-armed submarine following an investigation into his relationship with a Labour MP. The officer, who is married, was probed for allegedly having an inappropriate connection with Joani Reid.
The Ministry of Defence conducted additional security checks after the MP’s husband, David Taylor, was arrested on suspicion of assisting China’s foreign intelligence service. Despite no security breach found, the naval officer voluntarily withdrew from his submarine duties without facing disciplinary measures.
The officer reportedly engaged in “flirtatious” communication with Ms. Reid, although a source close to her disputes this claim. The two individuals first met as young adults, and Ms. Reid visited the Falsane base earlier this year as part of a program organized by the armed forces parliamentary scheme.
Both parties are believed to have met in person and exchanged messages, with no evidence of a physical relationship. The Royal Navy emphasized the importance of nuclear deterrent security and refrained from commenting on specific cases.
Meanwhile, Mr. Taylor, released on bail, denies any involvement in assisting China’s foreign intelligence. Ms. Reid has voluntarily suspended herself from the Labour whip pending internal investigations.
In a statement, Ms. Reid expressed confidence in her husband’s innocence and emphasized her family’s privacy rights, denying any connection to China or related matters. She highlighted her lack of involvement in her husband’s business activities and underscored the importance of respecting her children’s privacy.
