“Conservatives’ Two-Child Limit on Benefits Lifted, Affects 1.5M Kids”

Date:

Up to 1.5 million children are expected to benefit from the removal of the Conservative Party’s two-child limit on benefits, starting today. The decision has been praised by advocates, who blame the restrictive rule for driving 100 children daily into poverty. Despite opposition from the Conservatives and Reform, the groundbreaking change is set to lift approximately half a million children out of poverty.

Both right-wing parties have indicated their intent to reinstate the policy, which limits benefits like Universal Credit to a family’s first two children if they come into power. Mark Russell, CEO of The Children’s Society, emphasized the positive impact of ending the two-child limit, stating that it will significantly improve the lives of many families nationwide.

Angi Gibson, headteacher at Hadrian Park Primary School in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, highlighted the immediate and tangible benefits this change will bring to families. Gibson, who also serves as the president of the school leaders’ union NAHT, emphasized the profound impact this policy shift will have on children’s life opportunities.

Helen Barnard, director of policy and research at the foodbank charity Trussell, described the removal of the two-child limit as a crucial development for families relying on food banks. She noted that food banks anticipate a decrease in the number of parents seeking emergency food support once the policy change takes effect, potentially alleviating pressure on strained services and providing families with much-needed security.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced during the November Budget that the two-child limit would be completely eliminated, with research revealing that two-thirds of affected children reside in households where at least one member is employed. The Labour Party views this as a significant milestone in reducing child poverty, with chairwoman Anna Turley emphasizing the positive impact on nearly half a million children and their families.

Employment minister Dame Diana Johnson stated that the removal of the two-child limit will ensure a brighter future for hundreds of thousands of children, breaking the cycle of limited opportunities based on their background. This change reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing children’s life chances and represents a step forward in achieving this overarching goal.
