Serena and Venus Williams are set to join forces once more at the upcoming U.S. Open tennis tournament. The duo secured a spot in the doubles event through a wild card entry granted on Wednesday, a competition they have triumphed in twice previously.
Serena Williams made a comeback to the tennis scene this season after an absence of four years. The pair had intended to play together at Wimbledon, but Serena had to withdraw due to a knee injury sustained during her singles match. Despite a first-round loss at the Cincinnati Open, they are eager to showcase their prowess at the U.S. Open.
Having clinched the U.S. Open doubles titles in 1999 and 2009, the Williams sisters boast an impressive record of 27 wins and 7 losses across their nine appearances. Their last outing in 2022 ended in a first-round defeat, which was anticipated to be Serena’s final appearance at Flushing Meadows.
While Serena, aged 44, partnered with Carlos Alcaraz in mixed doubles, Venus, aged 46, is gearing up for the women’s singles tournament. The formidable siblings have a decorated history, having secured 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and multiple Olympic gold medals, in addition to their reign as the top-ranked women’s doubles team for eight weeks.
Serena has chosen not to compete in singles at the U.S. Open, where she has claimed six of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles. Nonetheless, she has accepted wild card entries for both doubles events, a decision influenced by her positive physical condition.
Their first U.S. Open doubles victory coincided with Serena’s initial singles triumph at the same tournament. Their dominance peaked around a decade later, with notable wins at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the French Open, cementing their legacy as one of the most successful sibling pairs in tennis history.
The much-awaited women’s doubles tournament kicks off on September 3, offering fans the chance to witness the formidable Williams sisters in action once again.
