A unique self-portrait by David Bowie, featuring his handprints, is set to hit the auction block, potentially transforming your living space. Created by the iconic singer in 1996, this artwork will be part of Sotheby’s Modern British and Irish Art Day Auction on October 15 for the first time.
Anticipated to fetch between £35,000 to £55,000 (approximately $66,000 to $104,000 Cdn), Bowie initially presented the painting to his St Ives gallerist. After being held in a private collection for thirty years, the piece is now on display in London before its upcoming auction.
This self-portrait is one of eight large-scale portraits crafted by Bowie in the mid-1990s, with this particular piece being the most emotionally expressive among the set. Sotheby’s senior specialist Jen Hardie highlighted the personal connection it establishes with the artist through Bowie’s direct gaze and handprints embedded in the composition.
Described as bold and richly colored, the painting showcases Bowie’s artistic prowess in the 1990s, providing a rare opportunity to view him not solely as a music legend but as a skilled artist in his own right. The artwork, done on paper, features Bowie staring directly at the observer, accentuating his distinctively uneven pupils, one larger than the other, giving the appearance of differently colored irises.
The intimate touch of Bowie’s handprints on the lower portion of the painting further enhances its appeal. For those intrigued by owning a tangible piece of David Bowie’s legacy, this auction presents a unique opportunity to acquire a hands-on memento from the Starman himself.
