A popular UK lido in Portsmouth is ready to welcome visitors this bank holiday weekend after undergoing a £7 million renovation and a four-year closure. Hilsea Lido, an iconic spot that first opened its doors in 1935 as an unheated saltwater pool, has a rich history, having served as a training venue for Team GB’s diving team during the 1936 and 1952 Olympic Games.
After years of wear and tear, the lido faced health and safety concerns and was in urgent need of renovation, leading to its closure in 2022. Now, following a £7.75 million refurbishment, Hilsea Lido is all set to reopen on May 2 with a fresh new look. The restoration includes a rejuvenated pool, new facilities like toilets, showers, and colorful changing rooms, as well as additional amenities such as a sauna, an ice cream parlor, and a food van for families to enjoy.
Excitement is brewing among swimmers as photos of the revamped lido were shared on Instagram, with many praising the transformation. Hilsea Lido’s general manager, Judit Kollat, expressed the council’s efforts in reviving the historic site, highlighting its significance as a community hub promoting well-being for all. Duncan Anderson, CEO of South Downs Leisure, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the emotional connection locals have with Hilsea Lido and their eagerness to return.
Operating hours for Hilsea Lido, as per its website, will be from 6am to 9pm Monday to Thursday, and from 6am to 8pm on Fridays. Weekend hours are from 7am to 7pm, with the last entry permitted an hour before closing.
