“Foul Sewage Odor Plagues Kent Community, Residents Suffer”

Date:

Residents of a small community in Kent are distressed by a foul sewage odor coming from a nearby estate, causing them to experience symptoms like vomiting, sleep difficulties, and watery eyes. The issue in Chestfield, close to Whitstable, stems from the Oxenden Park development, where waste is being pumped through the estate and into the sewer network, impacting the local residents.

Due to low property occupancy rates, the sewage system is not functioning properly, leading to wastewater stagnation in the area’s pipes. Celena Campbell, aged 71, and other residents have expressed the severe impact of the smell on their well-being, with Celena describing it as “absolutely horrendous” and affecting her mental health. Efforts to address the problem, such as temporary fixes and chemical treatments by developers Bellway, have not provided a lasting solution.

The situation has escalated to the point where residents organized a protest at the estate on April 12. Mandy Friend, one of the protestors, highlighted the challenges of dealing with the smell, including using bleach and scented candles to mask it. Bellway has acknowledged the issue and is working to implement a temporary fix to restore normal sewage flow promptly. They assured the community that steps are being taken seriously to resolve the matter as swiftly as possible.
