Yvette Cooper Urges Inclusion of Lebanon in Ceasefire

Date:

Yvette Cooper expresses deep worry over the increased Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon and emphasizes the urgent need for Lebanon to be included in a ceasefire agreement in the region. The Foreign Secretary criticized Israel’s ongoing bombardment of Lebanon, stating that it was a misguided move as tensions intensified in the region post-ceasefire announcement.

Following President Trump’s ceasefire announcement, confusion arose regarding the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, with Israel asserting that the war was not covered by the ceasefire while Pakistan claimed otherwise. Israel conducted numerous airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Beirut, leading to retaliatory threats from Iran in the Strait of Hormuz.

Cooper, in a BBC Breakfast interview, voiced her concerns about the humanitarian impact of the Israeli strikes and emphasized the necessity of including Lebanon in the ceasefire for the region’s security. She urged for an end to hostilities in Lebanon as a crucial step for Israel’s and the Middle East’s overall security.

Regarding the toll-free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, Cooper demanded unhindered shipping and opposed Iran’s potential introduction of tolls on the route, citing its international significance.

Global leaders, including Keir Starmer, called for Israel to cease its assault on Lebanon and support a lasting US-Iran ceasefire. French President Macron strongly condemned Israel’s indiscriminate strikes in Lebanon, emphasizing the need for peace.

US Vice President JD Vance clarified that Lebanon was not part of the ceasefire agreement due to a misunderstanding, in contrast to Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif’s assertion that the ceasefire applied to all regions. The ceasefire deal between Trump and Iran was finalized to prevent further conflict and reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz.
