The boxing community is in deep sorrow following the tragic passing of 25-year-old Paul McCullagh Junior. Hailing from Belfast, McCullagh had a remarkable amateur career, securing the Ulster Elite heavyweight title in 2019 and representing Ireland in an international match against the Netherlands.
With two victories under his belt, McCullagh, also known as ‘The Irish Drago’, competed for both the St. John Bosco club in West Belfast and his family’s McCullagh’s ABC in Dunmurry.
He was the grandson of the renowned Belfast boxing coach, Paul McCullagh, who was a prominent figure in the sport. Paul McCullagh Senior, the grandfather, passed away in October 2018 at the age of 72. Throughout his distinguished career, he mentored boxing icons like Barry McGuigan and Hugh Russell.
McCullagh’s father, Paul, a professional referee and accomplished amateur boxer, confirmed the news of his son’s demise. The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) expressed profound sadness over the loss of the young boxer, highlighting McCullagh’s achievements and conveying condolences to his family, friends, and clubs.
Former teammate Aidan Walsh and trainer Jonathan O’Brien shared heartfelt tributes, reminiscing about their time with McCullagh. The Belfast Boxing community also mourned his passing, offering condolences to his family and friends at St. John Bosco boxing club.
