“UK Homes Urged to Prepare for Digital Voice Phone Upgrade”

A significant transformation in the way phone calls are made is on the horizon for the UK, urging homeowners to take action before an impending deadline. The traditional copper landlines that have facilitated connections for years are being phased out and replaced with advanced technology known as Digital Voice, utilizing broadband for communication.

This upgrade not only aligns with modern requirements but also enhances reliability and introduces new functionalities such as clearer conversations, call forwarding to smartphones, and improved screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing messages.

Scheduled to be fully implemented by January 2027, BT has initiated a campaign led by Clare Balding to raise awareness about the transition. The ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch’ initiative aims to prompt households to inspect their landlines and ensure readiness for the digital era.

Research findings indicate that many Brits tend to procrastinate essential tasks, often assuming that functional systems do not require immediate action. Clare Balding emphasized the importance of responding promptly to provider communications to prevent service disruptions.

Assurances have been given that customers will likely retain their existing phone numbers, and costs are expected to remain stable without any increases. Most households will simply need to connect their current phones to their broadband hubs instead of the traditional copper wall sockets, minimizing the need for engineer visits.

Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, highlighted the significance of embracing the digital landline switch as a pivotal upgrade to the UK’s communication infrastructure. The transition promises enhanced reliability, security, and connectivity for all users.

BT also advises customers with special requirements, such as users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, to notify their provider promptly for appropriate support arrangements.

Digital Voice, BT’s novel home phone service, operates through broadband technology, offering features like Multi Call, three-way calling, and call diversion to various phone numbers, including mobile devices. The service aims to enhance call quality, eliminate disruptions, and provide a seamless transition for most households at no additional cost.

For those considering the switch to Digital Voice, the service encompasses both phone and broadband packages, ensuring a streamlined experience without extra charges. Upgrading to Digital Voice is anticipated to have minimal impact on phone usage for the majority of households, guaranteeing a seamless transition to advanced communication technology.
