Next week, the payment date for certain benefits, including Universal Credit, will be brought forward for thousands of recipients. This adjustment is due to the upcoming May bank holiday falling on Monday, May 4. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) does not process benefit payments on bank holidays; therefore, payments will be made on the last working day before the holiday.
If you are expecting a benefit payment on Monday, May 4, you can anticipate receiving it on Friday, May 1 instead. Similarly, with another bank holiday on Monday, May 25, payments scheduled for that day will be made on Friday, May 22.
While receiving payments early may extend the period until your next payment, the amount you receive will not change unless there have been alterations in your circumstances. This adjustment also affects certain HMRC benefits, such as Child Benefit.
The frequency of payment varies depending on the type of benefit you receive. For instance, Universal Credit is typically paid on a fixed day each month, while Child Benefit is usually disbursed every four weeks on either a Monday or Tuesday.
It is important to note that Universal Credit has replaced several other benefits, including Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Child Tax Credits, Working Tax Credits, and Housing Benefit.
For the complete schedule of payment frequencies for specific benefits, refer to the list provided. If you believe you have not received a payment, ensure to check your bank account first. If the payment date is correct and the funds are not available, contact the appropriate helpline. Please be aware that helplines may not be operational on bank holidays, necessitating a wait until the next business day.
