“Snooker Icon John Virgo Honored in Sheffield Memorial”

Date:

A tribute service honoring the late snooker icon John Virgo is set to take place at Sheffield Cathedral today, nearly two months after his passing. The memorial is expected to draw a host of snooker luminaries, including Virgo’s close friend Dennis Taylor, and his widow Rosie Ries. Scheduled to commence at 1pm, guests are anticipated to start arriving around 12.30pm. While fans are encouraged to attend, only 600 spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Following the cathedral service, a reception will be hosted at Sheffield Town Hall from 2.30pm to 5pm, featuring beverages and canapes. Known affectionately as JV, Virgo passed away at the age of 79 in February at his residence in Mijas Costa, Spain.

Ken Doherty, the 1997 World Champion, and snooker’s Master of Ceremonies Rob Walker have organized the service to give the snooker community and Sheffield residents an opportunity to commemorate Virgo’s life.

In attendance are renowned figures such as Jimmy White, Steve Davis, and Dennis Taylor, along with other former world champions and current players. Fans, including Phil Hudson, are also arriving to pay their respects to Virgo, expressing their admiration for his legacy and the impact he had on the sport.
