Two women who were born within minutes of each other at the same hospital in Buenos Aires have recently uncovered a shocking truth after a DNA test revealed they were switched at birth back in 1986.
The story revolves around Paula and Gabriela, both born on March 22, 1986, with just a 13-minute difference at the Italian Hospital in Buenos Aires. While one of them grew up in Miami, became a lawyer, and started her own family, the other was raised in the Morón district near the Argentine capital.
The discovery of the switch only came to light in 2024 when Paula decided to investigate her ancestry after a DNA test showed inconsistencies with her presumed biological family. Subsequent tests confirmed that she was not biologically related to her supposed parents.
Concerned by these results, Paula’s family sought legal help, leading to an investigation in Argentina. The lawyer leading the case, Ignacio Leguizamón Peña, worked with investigators to obtain hospital records from the day of birth, which initially showed no births recorded on March 22, 1986.
Further examination revealed that the seventh and eighth babies born that day, just 13 minutes apart, had been switched. The lawyer, following his intuition, pursued the case and eventually identified Gabriela and her adoptive family in Morón.
After confirming a match through DNA testing, it was established that the women had indeed been switched at birth. A meeting was arranged between both families, marking the first time Paula and Gabriela met their biological parents.
The emotional impact of this revelation was profound, with both women, now adults with families of their own, deeply affected by the news. Legal actions have been taken to investigate the circumstances of the switch, including allegations of identity suppression.
The case has now been taken up by federal courts, with prosecutor Carlos Stornelli overseeing the investigation into potential criminal responsibilities. A raid has been conducted at the Italian Hospital, seizing archival materials for further examination.
Renowned lawyer Fernando Burlando has joined the legal team, emphasizing the complexity of the case and the need to identify those responsible for the error or negligence that led to the switch.
