An NHS employee shared her distress following a disturbing encounter with a racist couple at a park. Apple Moorhouse stood up against Fyona Bairstow, 72, and Michael Bairstow, 77, who directed offensive remarks at her, telling her to “go back to your dinghy.” Apple, a British citizen residing in the country since 2009, expressed feeling “scared” and unsettled by the vile verbal attack.
The Bairstows targeted Apple after she requested them to leash their dog in Manor Heath Park in Halifax, West Yorkshire. A disturbing video of the incident, which later went viral, captured the couple, who had been married for thirty years, verbally assaulting the healthcare worker.
Reflecting on the incident, Apple emphasized the importance of addressing racism, stating that despite a decade of peaceful living in the UK, the recent escalation of such behavior left her apprehensive. She shared her reluctance to return to her healthcare work due to the fear instilled by the incident.
The Bairstows, who recorded the encounter, received eight-week jail sentences at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court after admitting to racially/religiously aggravated common assault against Apple. The incident occurred on August 28, 2025, at Manor Heath Park while Apple was with her father and daughter. Mr. Bairstow also pleaded guilty to assault by beating, involving another woman who intervened.
During sentencing, a magistrate expressed deep concern over the couple’s behavior, noting that such hostility and offensive language indicated deep-seated issues. The couple admitted feeling ashamed of their actions. The court proceedings detailed the confrontation, labeling it a “nasty incident.” Apple, originally from the Philippines, moved to the UK in 2009.
The court heard that the Bairstows’ dog was unleashed and approached Apple’s child, causing distress. When Apple advised Mr. Bairstow to leash the dog, he responded aggressively, telling her to “go back to your dinghy” and making offensive gestures.
