“Record Rainfall in Japan Leaves Thousands Stranded”

Date:

Record-breaking rainfall in Japan caused significant disruption, leaving thousands stranded at Tokyo’s Narita airport. The deluge led to floods in the surrounding area, affecting transportation, leaving 20,000 homes without power, and tragically claiming eight lives.

Chiba prefecture, adjacent to Tokyo, experienced over 360 millimetres of rain within a day, leading to road and railway inundation during a peak holiday period in Japan. Chiba Gov. Toshihito Kumagai expressed astonishment at the unprecedented situation, emphasizing the severity of the event.

Among the casualties was an individual trapped in a submerged vehicle, as reported by Chiba authorities and police. The airport staff at Narita worked tirelessly to assist stranded passengers by providing essential supplies like sleeping bags, water, and snacks, following disruptions that left around 7,000 people stranded.

People faced challenges in finding accommodations, with one resident, Minoru Yamasaki, forced to return to the airport after a failed hotel booking attempt. Despite the chaos, airport officials anticipated most flights to operate as scheduled on the following day.

The heavy rainfall led to power outages affecting over 20,000 homes due to flooding at a power substation, with gas supply interruptions impacting nearly 13,000 households. In Chiba city, hundreds sought refuge in government buildings, while road closures and traffic congestion forced drivers to find alternative routes.

Rail services were disrupted, although some routes from Narita to Tokyo resumed to alleviate congestion. The weather authorities confirmed a record-breaking 367 millimetres of rainfall in Chiba within 24 hours, surpassing the previous record set in 2013.

The impact of the rainfall in Japan highlighted the vulnerability of the region to extreme weather events, emphasizing the need for preparedness and resilience measures.
