“Pressure Mounts for PM to Act on Under 16s Social Media Ban”

Date:

Bereaved parents are urging Keir Starmer to take immediate action on social media platforms following the rejection of a proposal to block under 16s from accessing these platforms by MPs. Parents who have lost children due to social media-related incidents criticized the Government’s lack of swift action and expressed concerns about being outpaced by the rapid advancements of Big Tech.

The pressure on the Prime Minister to implement a ban on social media for under 16s is intensifying, with peers initiating a second vote on the matter in the Commons within a short span of six weeks. The recent amendment to the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill proposing the ban was turned down by MPs in a 256 to 150 vote.

Despite the rejection of the ban proposals, the Government is currently engaged in consultations regarding various online safety measures, including the potential social media ban, restricting addictive features on apps, and introducing curfews on online platforms. Education minister Olivia Bailey emphasized the need to consider a broader range of services and viewpoints before making any hasty decisions.

Ellen Roome, who suspects her son’s death may be linked to an online challenge, joined other bereaved parents in delivering a letter to No10 demanding immediate action. They highlighted the urgent need to recognize social media’s negative impact on children and emphasized the necessity for change, citing successful bans in countries like Australia, Spain, and Greece.

On the other hand, not all bereaved parents and online safety advocates support an immediate ban. Ian Russell, whose daughter took her life due to online harms, and Andy Burrows, CEO of the Molly Rose Foundation, urge caution, emphasizing the need for comprehensive regulation to address the risks associated with social media use by children.

The ongoing debate surrounding social media bans for under 16s reflects a broader concern among British parents, with a significant majority supporting preventive measures for children accessing social media. The push for regulatory changes in the digital landscape continues as stakeholders navigate the complexities of online safety and the evolving role of social media platforms in children’s lives.
