Counter-terrorism authorities are spearheading an inquiry into an arson incident that took place in London. The Metropolitan Police responded to a call just after 10:30 pm on Friday regarding an incident in Hendon, where a man was observed approaching a line of shops with a plastic bag containing three bottles of fluid. The man placed the bag next to the building, ignited the contents, but fortunately, the bottles did not fully ignite, resulting in only minor damage to the shopfront and no reported injuries. The perpetrator then fled the scene.
Although Counter Terrorism Policing London is leading the investigation, supported by officers from the North West Command Area, the Metropolitan Police clarified that the incident is not being treated as a terrorist act. The authorities are currently exploring various motives behind the attack, with no arrests made as of now.
Commander Helen Flanagan of Counter Terrorism Policing London stated that while the recent arson is not directly linked to previous incidents in the North West London area, similarities with other attacks have prompted Counter Terrorism officers to take charge of the investigation. Flanagan urged anyone with relevant information or footage to contact the police promptly to aid in their relentless pursuit of those responsible for such hateful acts against London’s communities.
Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, overseeing policing in the area, acknowledged community concerns following the recent incident in Golders Green and assured that local officers are collaborating closely with Counter Terrorism Policing to bolster the investigation. In response to heightened fears in the community, increased police presence, including armed patrols and officers trained under Project Servator, will be visible to reassure residents and deter potential offenders.
