Nigel Farage has declined to commit to an investigation into the tax affairs of his colleague at Reform UK, Richard Tice, following reports that Tice’s companies donated over £1 million to the party.
Farage swiftly defended Tice against accusations that four shell companies he managed had not paid close to £100,000 in taxes on profits from 2020 to 2022, dismissing the claims as a deflection. Labour criticized Farage, labeling him as being “in complete denial.”
The controversy arose when it was revealed that Tice’s property investment firm, Tisun Investments Ltd, had transferred £1,113,000 to Reform UK. When asked if the party would conduct an inquiry given the direct connection between Tice’s companies’ tax affairs and the party, Farage evaded the question, implying that Tice was being unfairly targeted.
Pressure mounted on Farage to dismiss Tice following an investigation by the Sunday Times raising significant concerns. Tice himself expressed willingness to rectify any tax discrepancies if it turns out his firms owed more to HMRC.
Farage recalled a similar situation a decade ago when Tice was investigated by HMRC after publicly supporting Brexit, only to later receive a tax rebate. He highlighted Tice’s extensive business background and suggested that the accuser, a Labour Party activist, had ulterior motives.
The ongoing scrutiny prompted calls for transparency from Farage about Tice’s role within the party. Labour’s Anna Turley criticized Farage for deflecting and accused Reform’s leadership of denial, emphasizing that the issue was not going unnoticed.
Tice defended himself, emphasizing his long, successful business career and commitment to tax compliance. He acknowledged the importance of tax efficiency while expressing readiness to address any errors and pay what is owed, if necessary.
In response to the persistent allegations, Tice underscored the impact on businesspeople considering entering politics and highlighted the need for a diverse range of experiences in government.
