The US president’s recent statement has caused concern among medical professionals. Donald Trump has faced criticism for his lack of transparency regarding his health and for challenging established medical science on various topics such as painkillers, autism, and vaccines.
Specialists have refuted his assertion that carbonated beverages can eliminate cancer cells. On a recent episode of Donald Trump Jr.’s podcast, Triggered with Don Jr., Dr. Mehmet Oz mentioned Trump’s belief that diet soda could be beneficial because it can kill grass, suggesting it might have a similar effect on cancer cells in the body.
Despite Trump’s son, Don Jr., defending his father’s claim, medical experts disagree. Umar Razzaq, a UK pharmacist with over 20 years of experience, emphasized that there is no scientific basis to support the idea that soft drinks can eradicate cancer cells in humans.
Dr. Andy Gaya, an oncologist, clarified that while Trump’s comments may have been made in jest, they lack any factual basis. Gaya explained that the body regulates its acid levels and consuming soda does not create an acidic enough environment to kill cancer cells.
This is not the first time Trump has made unfounded medical claims. He previously made inaccurate statements about COVID-19, suggesting that most cases were harmless. Additionally, he has propagated misinformation linking autism to vaccines and made misleading comments about abortion healthcare.
Dr. Gaya elaborated that while highly sugary or acidic environments can harm cells in a lab setting, fizzy drinks are unlikely to have the same effect in the body. The spread of false information, especially through AI-generated content, poses a significant challenge in combating misinformation.
Dr. Tony Banerjee, a GP and cancer survivor, cautioned against trivializing serious health issues with unsubstantiated claims. He emphasized the importance of evidence-based health messaging and the responsibility of influential figures to avoid promoting myths that could mislead the public.
