An enraged driver violently attacked a couple in the presence of their young child during a heated altercation in a parking lot.
Kurt Kirkham became agitated when the victims pointed out his incorrect one-way driving in a North Shields car park. The incident escalated when Kirkham physically assaulted the father, causing a fractured sternum, and aggressively pulled the mother’s hair, throwing her to the ground as their daughters watched in distress.
The family, including their three and nine-year-old daughters, was en route to pick up a pet on March 15 when the confrontation unfolded. Kirkham, behind the wheel of a silver Mercedes, clashed with the couple on a one-way road section near Dunelm.
Following a verbal exchange, Kirkham physically attacked the man through the car window, then proceeded to open the back door where the children were seated. Concerned for his daughters’ safety, the father exited the vehicle to divert Kirkham’s attention, leading to further violent assaults on both parents.
Upon his arrest, Kirkham admitted to driving incorrectly and expressed regret over the incident. The victims described the harrowing experience as traumatizing, especially for the children who witnessed the violent outburst.
Kirkham, with a history of violence and prior suspended sentences, pleaded guilty to assault charges and received a 29-month prison sentence. The judge acknowledged the severity of the offense, highlighting the impact on the children who witnessed their parents being attacked.
The court emphasized the gravity of the situation, underscoring the traumatic nature of the event and the need to protect children from such violence, as Kirkham was held accountable for his actions.
