Nestled along the River Waveney in Suffolk is a charming market town that has been recognized as a top living destination. Beccles, with its historic allure and friendly atmosphere, offers an affordable and delightful experience for a day trip.
Stepping into Beccles on a sunny spring day, the town exuded a cheerful vibe, with people strolling through flower-lined streets and a busker playing lively tunes. The town, dating back to Elizabethan times, showcases a blend of architectural marvels such as a Gothic church, elegant Georgian townhouses, and quaint half-timbered buildings, creating a picturesque setting ideal for leisurely walks. The town center boasts a variety of independent shops, including the charming Books & Crannies bookstore.
Beccles, often featured in lists of desirable places to reside, is a popular destination in the East of England. Despite its acclaim among real estate experts, the town remains reasonably priced. Property listings reveal houses available for around £200,000, well below the national average.
During our stay at the Hippersons Boatyard on the town’s outskirts, we experienced a unique retreat with options ranging from glamping to floating homes. Our accommodation, Wild Cat Island, showcased ample space with two bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a scenic terrace overlooking the river, providing a tranquil setting for relaxation.
Exploring the River Waveney on a hired boat, we navigated the calm waters with guidance from the friendly staff. Local café Relish provided us with a delectable picnic basket filled with freshly baked treats, allowing us to savor the serene river views while enjoying a leisurely lunch.
To cap off the day, we dined at Oak Fired at the Royal Oak, a cozy pizza restaurant renowned for its authentic Neapolitan Pizza. The welcoming atmosphere and delicious pizza made for a memorable dining experience.
As night fell, we returned to our accommodation, savoring the peaceful ambiance under the starlit sky before drifting off to sleep, lulled by the gentle movements of the river.
