Passengers faced travel disruptions as a significant number of flights were canceled by four major airlines, resulting in stranded travelers. Around 500 flights were delayed by Capital Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, China Eastern Airlines, and Pakistan International Airlines, according to reports from Travel and Tour World. The airlines collectively canceled 23 flights at various Asian airports, including Shanghai Pudong and Islamabad International Airport.
The flight cancellations led to a cascade of issues, with passengers missing connections and enduring lengthy disruptions. Overcrowded waiting areas and extensive queues were reported at Shanghai and Beijing airports. Concurrently, Aer Lingus is expected to cancel approximately 500 flights due to mandatory aircraft maintenance.
A spokesperson for Aer Lingus stated that the airline had initiated its summer schedule, necessitating recent cancellations for mandatory maintenance and minor schedule adjustments. The majority of affected customers are being accommodated on same-day services. Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, cautioned about potential flight cancellations during the summer due to escalating jet fuel costs.
Amid these developments, Air Canada announced the suspension of services to New York’s JFK International Airport over the summer due to jet fuel shortages caused by the Iran conflict. Flights from Toronto and Montreal to JFK will halt on June 1 and resume on October 25, while services to LaGuardia and Newark airports will continue. Air Canada will provide alternative travel options to affected customers during this period. The airline cited soaring jet fuel prices and economic considerations for adjusting its flight schedules.
