Smartphones have undoubtedly simplified various aspects of our lives, but the manner in which we engage with them can significantly impact our mental well-being, a personal realization for many, including myself.

Being deeply involved in the realm of online safety, I am acutely aware of the potential negative effects that constant access to social media, gaming, and messaging can have on boundaries and overall wellness. Despite this awareness, I occasionally find myself spending excessive time scrolling through social platforms or checking work emails beyond regular hours.

Concerns arise regarding the influence smartphones may have on my children, who are yet to grasp the importance of prioritizing mental health while engaging with social media platforms.

As guardians, we strive to ensure our children’s safety and happiness when using smartphones while also feeling the weight of guiding them toward digital literacy, ultimately aiming for their responsible and beneficial use of technology.

To maintain a healthy equilibrium, our family has implemented certain rules, such as banning phones at the dining table and storing them away during shared activities like watching movies, taking walks, or playing games.

Allocating time for a digital detox is crucial for all of us, emphasizing the significance of valuing family time without being glued to our devices. Additionally, the kids have defined screen time limits, with phones transitioning to downtime at 7 pm and being prohibited in their rooms overnight.

We engage in open discussions about smartphones, emphasizing the risks of oversharing on messaging platforms and the importance of setting online boundaries and seeking consent.

Exploring trending topics like AI chatbots or misinformation provides valuable conversation starters. Importantly, we encourage the children to share their views and ask questions to foster a dialogue rather than a monologue.

Even with my expertise in online safety, there are instances where I encounter topics that require further exploration or where I feel uncertain about providing accurate responses, prompting me to seek information online.
