“Deadly Floods Trap Hundreds in Nepal-China Tunnels”

Date:

Hundreds of workers are currently believed to be trapped in tunnels at hydropower sites on the Nepal-China border following catastrophic flooding. The death toll has surpassed 950, with over 4,400 individuals reported missing in Nepal and China combined. In Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, 900 workers are unaccounted for at 12 damaged hydropower projects. Approximately 500 workers are thought to be stuck in tunnels. Rescue efforts are underway, but the chances of finding survivors are decreasing according to experts. Arnold Dix, an Australian tunnel rescue specialist, expressed optimism about locating survivors. He highlighted the significant loss of skilled workers in the country due to the tragedy.

Rescue operations are focused on freeing individuals trapped in large tunnels designed for water flow control. Efforts are being made to rescue workers stuck inside the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project in Rasuwa, where a substantial number of workers are believed to be trapped. In the Trishuli-3 Hydropower Project, crews are working to reach those inside a tunnel that collapsed during the floods. Meanwhile, in China, reconstruction work is underway to restore the road leading to the Gyirong Port border crossing.

The Canadian government has deployed officials to assist in the search and rescue operations in Nepal. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand confirmed that around 30 Canadians are still unaccounted for. Family members of missing individuals are desperately waiting for news, hoping for the safe return of their loved ones. The situation remains challenging as rescue teams race against time to locate survivors in the aftermath of the disaster.

The tragic events unfolded after a glacial collapse triggered flash floods, causing widespread devastation in the region. The coordinated rescue efforts involve multiple countries working together to locate missing individuals and provide support to affected families. As the rescue mission continues, families anxiously await news of their missing relatives, hoping for positive outcomes amidst the ongoing challenges.
