SiriusXM Comedy Shake-Up: Comedians Face Income Loss

Date:

Comedian Liz Miele has recently faced a significant income loss, a situation shared by numerous other comedians. SiriusXM has discontinued its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, which used to showcase over 800 comedians on rotation, replacing it with a channel owned by top comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

This change has resulted in a loss of income and exposure for Miele and many other working-class comedians, while prominent celebrity comics now dominate the channel. Miele expressed how SiriusXM was crucial for her financial stability in the past, helping many comedians sustain themselves.

Despite promises from Maniscalco and SiriusXM to provide space for comedians at various career stages, industry advocacy group Stand Up for Standup reveals a different reality. The previous channel featured over 800 comedians monthly, each earning $15 in royalties per spin, whereas the rebranded channel only showcased 275 comedians last month, with the top 50 artists receiving more than 75% of plays.

Miele highlighted the shift towards wealth concentration, noting that before, a diverse range of comedians made a decent income, but now only a select few, including established names like Chris Rock and Kevin Hart, are benefiting. The absence of platforms like SiriusXM could hinder aspiring comedians from gaining exposure like Maniscalco.

Canadian comedian Danish Anwar shared how his royalties from Raw Comedy dropped by 30 to 40%, affecting many colleagues who relied on these earnings. The situation is especially challenging for Canadian comics seeking career opportunities in the U.S., as SiriusXM royalties often support their work visas.

Several high-profile comedians have urged Maniscalco to ensure opportunities for emerging comedians on the channel. Despite backlash, Maniscalco clarified that the decision to discontinue Raw Comedy was made by SiriusXM before his involvement, citing underperformance as the reason.

In response to the criticism, Maniscalco pledged to collaborate with SiriusXM to include a variety of voices in stand-up comedy on his channel. However, Anwar remains skeptical, emphasizing the need for tangible actions over statements to support comedians financially.

Reflecting on past advocacy efforts in Canada, comedian Steph Tolev encouraged U.S. comedians to speak out against unfavorable decisions by media companies. Anwar emphasized the importance of solidarity in the comedy industry during challenging times, highlighting the need for better pay and industry practices.

The recent changes have significantly impacted comedians financially, prompting concerns about the future of comedy careers in the evolving media landscape.
