Another Sikh Canadian activist has received a “duty to warn” letter, raising concerns about the Carney government’s handling of Indian government interference and transnational repression. Inderjeet Singh Gosal reported being contacted by the RCMP and informed of a threat to his life, prompting the issuance of the letter. Gosal disclosed that the RCMP offered him enrollment in a witness protection program, which he declined, expressing his commitment to advocating for the Khalistan referendum despite the risks.
Khalistan refers to the proposed independent Sikh homeland in India’s Punjab region, with Sikh separatists advocating for it through non-binding referendums. Following the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the leader of the Canadian referendum campaign, Gosal assumed his position. This latest warning marks Gosal’s sixth official police alert, part of a series issued by Canadian authorities amid efforts to mend relations with India.
Despite diplomatic tensions and allegations of Indian government involvement in Nijjar’s assassination, Canada has aimed to enhance economic ties with India. However, the persistence of duty to warn letters suggests ongoing security concerns for Sikh activists. The UN has probed Canada’s response to threats faced by Sikh individuals, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance to safeguard their safety.
Gosal thanked the RCMP for notifying him of the threats but criticized the Carney government’s approach. He reiterated his determination to proceed with organizing the upcoming referendum, highlighting the democratic exercise that faces suppression from the Indian government’s transnational repression efforts. India has denied any involvement in violent activities in Canada, including the Nijjar incident, as Gosal remains resolute in his activism despite the risks.
