UK Set to Retire Copper Phone Network, Move to Digital Voice

Date:

In just half a year, the UK is gearing up for a significant upgrade to its communication network, marking one of the most substantial transformations in decades. Millions of additional households have been alerted to prepare for the upcoming change. Starting from January 2027, the traditional copper phone network in the UK will be permanently retired, making way for the innovative Digital Voice platform. This new service utilizes broadband connections for making calls, replacing the century-old copper wire system.

This transition is crucial for households to heed as failure to switch to Digital Voice could result in the loss of their current landline service. A recent awareness campaign titled ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch,’ spearheaded by Clare Balding, emphasized the importance of verifying landlines to ensure readiness for the digital era.

While the national deadline is six months away, the transition is gaining momentum. BT’s Openreach, the operator of the UK’s largest broadband network, has issued “stop sell” notifications at an additional 112 telephone exchanges. This decision prohibits broadband providers, such as BT, Sky, Vodafone, and Plusnet, from selling or transferring customers to older copper-based broadband and phone services in those regions.

According to Openreach, the “stop sell” action occurs when a majority (75%) of premises connected to a specific exchange can access ultrafast Full Fibre service. Customers seeking to switch, upgrade, or modify their broadband or phone service will need to opt for a new digital service over the advanced Full Fibre network.

The recent expansion of the “stop sell” directive now covers a total of 1,572 exchanges, serving approximately 15.4 million homes and businesses across the UK. Despite the challenges associated with transitioning to full fibre and Digital Voice, the benefits include enhanced broadband speeds, superior connectivity, and a modern phone service tailored to today’s digital landscape.

Individuals uncertain about their home’s status can utilize the Openreach postcode checker to verify available services. James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, highlighted that the “stop sell” initiative is crucial in propelling the UK towards a modern full fibre environment. By phasing out outdated copper-based services in fibre-sufficient regions, the focus is on migrating customers to more efficient digital infrastructure, reducing maintenance costs, and supporting the industry-wide shift ahead of the impending switch-off of the legacy Public Switched Telephone Network. The transition to a digital phone line will be essential for all within the next six months.
