President Donald Trump recently made a joke similar to one by TV host Jimmy Kimmel, leading to calls for Kimmel to be fired.
During an event welcoming King Charles to the United States, Trump humorously mentioned his parents’ 63-year marriage, jokingly acknowledging he might not achieve the same longevity, saying to Melania, “That’s not a record we’re going to be able to match, darling.” Melania did not visibly react. This remark mirrored a joke made by Kimmel on his show, which stirred controversy among the First Lady and Trump administration officials who demanded Kimmel’s dismissal.
Kimmel, host of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, made the joke during a recent episode, explaining it was a light-hearted jab about the age difference between Trump and Melania. The joke followed an incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner where a shooting occurred, leading Melania and allies of the President to misinterpret the joke as inciting violence. Melania criticized Kimmel’s words as corrosive, while Trump called it a “despicable call to violence” and demanded Kimmel’s immediate firing by Disney and ABC.
Subsequently, the Federal Communications Commission, responsible for broadcasting licenses, initiated an early review of ABC’s licenses in response to the joke. Despite Trump’s call for Kimmel’s termination, there is no indication that Disney or ABC will comply. Kimmel had previously faced suspension last September for comments that angered supporters of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, but returned to his show after a brief hiatus.
