Discussion about subscription traps has been ongoing for quite some time.
After thorough consultations, the enactment of a new law, and further deliberation on its implementation, we now have updated regulations safeguarding consumers when they subscribe to services – a significant development indeed!
As per the Department for Business and Trade, it is anticipated that an impressive £400 million annually will be saved thanks to the crackdown on businesses exploiting consumers through misleading or intentional subscription practices.
Kate Dearden, Minister for Consumer Protection, emphasized, “There’s nothing more exasperating than seeing your hard-earned money vanish from your account due to a forgotten subscription.”
“These new regulations empower consumers to take charge of their finances by ensuring subscriptions are transparent, equitable, and simpler to terminate,” she added.
Interestingly, the implementation of these new rules is set for Spring 2027, despite the current availability of existing laws to assist consumers stuck in unwanted services.
Curious about how subscription traps operate and the specifics of the new regulations? Here is an informative guide.
