Barry and Eddie Hearn have exceeded the £1 billion mark with their thriving sports media business. The dynamic father and son team are the brains behind Matchroom Sports, a company deeply involved in boxing, snooker, and darts.
Barry’s journey began in snooker during the 1970s, where he represented the legendary six-time world champion Steve Davis. In 1982, at the age of 77, Barry established Matchroom, and his son Eddie, now 46, has played a pivotal role in expanding the empire, particularly gaining recognition in the boxing world.
Matchroom has managed renowned athletes such as Frank Bruno, Chris Eubank Sr, and Lennox Lewis, but their association with Anthony Joshua has garnered the most attention. Barry also holds the position of chairman at the Professional Darts Corporation, contributing significantly to the surging popularity of darts in recent years. Moreover, he has influenced the snooker scene by acquiring the World Snooker Tour in 2010.
Their accomplishments have propelled them to the upper echelons of wealth, landing them the third spot on The Sunday Times rich list in UK sports, boasting a combined fortune of £1.035 billion. They trail only behind F1 magnate Bernie Ecclestone (£2bn) and power couple David and Victoria Beckham (£1.185bn).
Surpassing F1 driver Sir Lewis Hamilton, who ranks fifth with £435m, are Matchroom’s top client, Joshua, in eighth place with an estimated wealth of £240m, and Tyson Fury at ninth with £162m. The list also includes England captain Harry Kane and tennis legend Sir Andy Murray sharing the tenth spot with £110m each.
Although Barry laid the foundation for the Matchroom empire, Eddie has significantly contributed to its growth. In a piece for the Big Issue in 2020, Eddie reflected on the drive instilled by his father and his determination to surpass his achievements. The spirit of competition between them fuels their continuous pursuit of success and legacy building.
