Keir Starmer emphasized the crucial role of Britain’s nuclear deterrent in safeguarding national security, cautioning against diverting attention from potential threats, particularly from Russia amidst the Iran crisis. The Mirror was granted exclusive access to accompany the Prime Minister on a visit to a nuclear-armed Vanguard-Class submarine off the Scottish coast following a lengthy deployment.

During the visit, labeled “Day Zero,” Mr. Starmer commended the Royal Navy submariners for their dedicated service and stressed the significance of the submarines as a frontline defense measure deterring adversaries like Vladimir Putin amid escalating global tensions. The Prime Minister highlighted the submarines’ pivotal role in ensuring both UK and NATO security.

Emphasizing the importance of acknowledging and appreciating the submariners’ commitment, Mr. Starmer expressed humility in meeting the crew and recognizing their contribution to national security. The visit marked only the second occasion a Prime Minister has visited the Vanguard submarines, crucial components of Britain’s nuclear deterrence strategy.

In a reflection of the ongoing geopolitical challenges, Mr. Starmer underscored the real threat posed by Russia, particularly in Ukraine, and the necessity of maintaining vigilance. He reiterated the vital role of Britain’s nuclear capabilities in deterring potential adversaries, emphasizing their longstanding role in safeguarding the nation.

Addressing concerns over defense spending and readiness, the Prime Minister outlined plans to increase military expenditure to enhance preparedness for future conflicts. Amid calls for greater investment in defense capabilities, Mr. Starmer stressed the need for coordinated efforts with European partners to strengthen NATO and bolster regional security.

As the Iran crisis unfolds, Mr. Starmer reiterated the UK’s commitment to defensive action in key waterways while refraining from direct involvement in the conflict. He affirmed the government’s focus on acting in the British national interest, prioritizing strategic decisions aligned with safeguarding national security and stability.
