Jet Fuel Prices and Iran Crisis Threaten Travel Industry

Date:

Four travel companies have gone out of business in 2026, resulting in numerous vacationers having their bookings canceled. The surge in jet fuel costs caused by the Iran crisis, coupled with global travel uncertainties due to travel advisories, may potentially push more companies to the edge. When travel firms collapse, travelers face the loss of both their trip and their money, unless protected by ATOL coverage.

In January, Regen Central Ltd, originally based in Hertfordshire before moving to London, declared insolvency, leading to the cancellation of all holidays without refunds. The company lost its ATOL protection on January 13. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) stated that Regen Central had no outstanding ATOL-covered bookings, emphasizing that accommodations, non-flight, or flight-only bookings are not safeguarded by ATOL.

On January 23, Gold Crest Holidays, a family-run coach operator in West Yorkshire operating for three decades, announced its closure due to escalating costs. All upcoming trips and packages were terminated immediately. The company expressed deep regret for ceasing operations, attributing the decision to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, changes in key partnerships affecting business, and rising operational expenses.

Gold Crest Holidays instructed affected customers to contact ABTA for refunds and assistance following the cancellation of all future departures. The company initiated voluntary liquidation proceedings in March as documented by Companies House. Asiara UK, previously known as Haivenu Tours, offering holiday packages to Asian destinations, ceased trading on January 21 without disrupting existing bookings. Simply Florida, a Glasgow-based travel agency arranging trips to various destinations, including popular theme parks and cities, ceased operations on January 20 but ensured ATOL protection for affected travelers.
