Peter Mandelson has been named the UK’s ‘Trump whisperer’ despite failing his security vetting, according to a recent admission by the Government, dealing a significant blow to Keir Starmer. No10 asserted that the Prime Minister was unaware of security officials rejecting Mandelson’s clearance before his assignment to Washington last year. The Foreign Office reportedly intervened to overturn the decision, leading to backlash from MPs and calls for explanations from the Foreign Office.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves, speaking in Washington DC, implied that Starmer and former Foreign Secretary David Lammy should have been aware of the situation, emphasizing her lack of involvement in the vetting process. The government clarified that no ministers were informed, attributing the decision to officials in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
Following revelations that Mandelson’s security clearance was granted against advice, the Prime Minister was only made aware recently and has initiated an inquiry into the circumstances. Despite the rejection during the vetting process, Mandelson was already announced as the UK’s representative in Washington to engage with President Donald Trump.
Starmer has pledged transparency, with the Government committed to releasing all documents related to Mandelson’s appointment. In response to demands from MPs, a vote mandated the disclosure of relevant files, with assurances that any redactions based on national security concerns will be shared with the Intelligence and Security Committee.
Dame Emily Thornberry urged for honesty amid reports of Mandelson’s clearance failure and subsequent appointment as ambassador to the US. Concerns were raised about overriding vetting issues and lack of transparency, prompting calls for clarity and accountability.
