French President Emmanuel Macron disclosed that France will host a diplomatic meeting with the UK in Paris on Friday to address the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz. President Macron emphasized the urgency of reopening the strait in a message, excluding President Trump from the upcoming summit.
Macron, after discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, announced a gathering of “non-belligerent countries” to contribute to a defensive mission for restoring navigation freedom in the strait under suitable security conditions. This move comes as Trump finds himself increasingly excluded from discussions concerning the Middle East by various European nations.
A spokesperson from the White House asserted the self-sufficiency of the United States in handling the situation, highlighting the effectiveness of the naval blockade. However, concerns have been raised about Trump’s involvement potentially hindering diplomatic progress, as per French diplomats cited by the Wall Street Journal.
While British officials are apprehensive about aggravating Trump further by excluding the US, opposition leader Keir Starmer has emphasized maintaining a distance from escalating tensions. Starmer stressed that Britain will not support the blockade, aiming to avoid being drawn into any conflict.
The coalition’s main objective is to ensure the safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz post-conflict. Plans include rescuing stranded vessels, demining operations, and establishing a military program. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot emphasized the necessity of regional stability for deploying the proposed mission.
Germany is expected to join the operation, with Trump previously criticizing NATO allies for not assisting the US in securing the strait. Trump’s social media posts have underscored his frustration with NATO allies, warning of potential withdrawal from the alliance if more support is not forthcoming.
