A concerning surge in misogyny within schools, driven by ‘Manosphere’ influencers, has been flagged as a significant issue by government officials. Recent research conducted by the NASUWT union revealed that nearly a quarter of female teachers have experienced harassment from students, marking a 6% increase over the past four years. The study also indicated a rise in aggressive behavior, disrespect towards females, and extremist beliefs, with a majority attributing social media as a contributing factor.
NASUWT’s General Secretary, Matt Wrack, issued a warning about the escalating masculinity crisis in educational institutions, emphasizing the urgent need for additional support to address this troubling trend. Survey results showed a notable increase, with 23.4% of female educators reporting incidents of misogyny from students in the last year, up from 17.4% in 2023. Moreover, over one-fifth disclosed encountering discriminatory language related to gender, race, or sexual orientation.
The experiences of these teachers have left them feeling degraded, violated, and disempowered, as per NASUWT’s statement. One teacher shared her distressing encounters, including students making inappropriate jokes about assault in her presence. Wrack stressed the importance of government intervention to help teachers combat this concerning behavior, urging policymakers to take swift action.
Teachers require assistance in addressing and defusing toxic conduct, while the government must also do more to hold accountable platforms that propagate hate and misogyny on social media channels targeted at young individuals. Wrack highlighted the exploitation of youth to serve the profit-driven motives of tech giants, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention to safeguard the education system.
Additionally, a statement from the Department for Education underscored the role of education in combating learned misogynistic attitudes, affirming the commitment to reducing violence against women and girls. The DfE outlined initiatives to empower teachers in identifying harmful ideologies and promoting positive role models among students. Efforts include enhanced guidelines on mobile phone usage in schools and consultations to foster healthy relationships with technology among children.
