“Starmer Backs UK-EU Alignment Law, Critics Raise Concerns”

Date:

Keir Starmer has supported the proposal to enable the UK to align with European Union regulations without requiring individual votes from Members of Parliament on each regulation.

As part of the government’s efforts to reset relations with Brussels, a new law will be introduced to expedite the adoption of single market rules when deemed beneficial for the UK. This can be done through the use of Henry VIII powers, allowing ministers to pass laws via secondary legislation without full parliamentary scrutiny.

Starmer emphasized that any legislation permitting this alignment would still need to be approved by MPs. He stressed the importance of a closer relationship with Europe for the UK’s best interests, citing benefits in areas such as trade facilitation, reduced business burdens, and lower prices.

Critics raised concerns that the plan to dynamically align with Brussels through secondary legislation could sideline the authority of Westminster. While the government has stated its intention not to rejoin the single market, Chancellor Rachel Reeves highlighted that diverging from EU rules should be an exception rather than the norm.

The government assured that the proposed bill will undergo standard parliamentary procedures, and any new EU treaties or laws will face scrutiny by Parliament. The aim is to secure a lucrative food and drink trade deal, supporting British jobs and streamlining regulations for farmers and businesses.

While there may be opportunities for votes on secondary legislation, they do not involve the same level of scrutiny as new laws. Blocking changes through votes could lead to issues with the EU and potential retaliatory measures from Brussels. Negotiations are ongoing between Britain and the EU on various agreements, including a youth mobility scheme, a common sanitary and phytosanitary area, and linking emissions trading systems.
