At least 250 individuals are unaccounted for following a tragic incident where a boat overturned while en route to Malaysia. The missing persons include Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals who were traveling in the Andaman Sea towards Malaysia, as reported by the United Nations’ refugee and migration agencies.
Details regarding the exact time of the boat capsizing and the status of search and rescue operations for the missing individuals remain unclear as of Wednesday morning, April 15. The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) issued a joint statement on Tuesday, revealing that the trawler set off from Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, carrying a significant number of passengers bound for Malaysia.
According to the agencies, the vessel encountered overcrowding, strong winds, and rough seas, leading to a loss of control and subsequent sinking. The UNHCR and IOM highlighted that the incident underscores the prolonged displacement of Rohingya people and the ongoing challenges faced by this community.
The organizations emphasized that the continued violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state has created uncertainty around the safe return of Rohingyas to Myanmar. Limited access to humanitarian aid, education, and employment opportunities in refugee camps have prompted vulnerable Rohingya refugees to undertake perilous sea journeys, often deceived by false promises of better prospects abroad.
UNHCR and IOM called upon the international community to enhance financial support and solidarity to provide critical assistance to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, which has provided refuge to over 1 million Rohingya individuals from Myanmar.
