The UK Government has urged British citizens with summer holiday plans to be cautious as the number of flight cancellations rises. Airlines are cutting flights to save money due to escalating jet fuel costs amid the ongoing Middle East crisis. Approximately 13,000 flights worldwide have been canceled in May, with 1,468 flights from major UK airports, resulting in 275,616 scrapped seats.
Although the total number of cancellations seems significant, airlines have also added numerous flights, reducing the net cancellations. Despite concerns about flight disruptions and jet fuel shortages, a joint statement from the Foreign Office, Department of Transport, and Department of Energy Security reassures travelers that there is currently no need to alter travel plans. The government is closely monitoring the situation and working with the aviation industry to minimize passenger disruptions.
The global jet fuel scarcity, exacerbated by the Iran conflict, has posed a more severe challenge to airlines than the Covid-19 pandemic. Jet fuel supplies have dropped to record lows due to disruptions in fuel shipping routes caused by the conflict. Tony Fernandes, the CEO of AirAsia, expressed concerns about the tripled jet fuel prices, highlighting the unprecedented challenges faced by the aviation industry.
Amid these challenges, there have been reports of budget carrier Spirit going under, signaling potential risks for other low-cost airlines. The conflict has led to the cancellation of up to two million seats on 13,000 flights in May, impacting airports such as Istanbul and Munich the most. Lufthansa and Aer Lingus have canceled thousands of flights, with the UK economy being particularly vulnerable to jet fuel shortages, according to Allianz Trade researchers.
In response to the mounting pressures on airlines, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has relaxed the “use it or lose it” rules to alleviate strain and is promoting staycations to manage expectations in case of holiday disruptions. These rules mandate that airlines must use their allocated airport slots to retain them.
Travelers are advised to stay informed by checking with airlines before departure and consulting the latest FCDO travel advice. It is also recommended to have appropriate travel insurance to mitigate any potential risks.
