“U.S. Trade Rep Warns Canada Against Retaliation”

Date:

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that the U.S. would not tolerate any retaliation from Canada in response to President Donald Trump’s proposed tariff increase. Greer emphasized that the measures were not aimed solely at Canada but were part of a broader effort to safeguard domestic supply chains.

In recent discussions between Canada and the U.S., Greer described the talks as positive, noting that while Canada seemed inclined towards a more conciliatory approach, the U.S. was focused on executing President Trump’s trade agenda. The looming Aug. 19 deadline has been viewed as a critical point in the negotiations, with potential implications for the continuation of talks.

Both countries have been engaged in negotiations to address existing trade disputes, including the potential imposition of a 50% tariff on numerous Canadian goods. While the U.S. has put forward proposals to reduce sectoral tariffs, significant gaps remain in reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.

Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about the prospects of a swift resolution, cautioning against concessions on key issues such as dairy negotiations. Despite assertions from the U.S. regarding Canada’s retaliatory actions, former Canadian ambassador Frank McKenna defended Canada’s stance, arguing that it was a response to unfair and illegal measures imposed by the U.S.
