“U.S. Legislators Urge Trump to Halt Conflict with Iran”

Date:

A group of U.S. legislators urged Donald Trump to halt the conflict with Iran as it hit the six-month milestone on Friday. The U.S. president has sent conflicting messages about the status of the war. Trump claimed that the military’s offensive actions and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz have been effective in achieving U.S. goals. He recently shared a social media post with the caption “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED 2026,” featuring AI-generated images depicting the late Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The war began on Feb. 28 with U.S. and Israeli airstrikes.

Dialogue between Tehran and Washington has mainly consisted of aggressive rhetoric, with third parties handling diplomacy. Trump seemed more focused on trade negotiations with Canada this week rather than the conflict with Iran. The president is expected to shift his attention towards the upcoming Nov. 3 midterms, where he has been involved in influencing voting practices while preparing for a Republican mini-convention.

Rep. Adam Smith, a top Democrat on the House armed service committees, highlighted various issues resulting from the war, emphasizing the impact on military personnel. Smith pointed out the casualties among American service members and civilians, along with the significant financial costs incurred.

The U.S. and Israel have eliminated key Iranian religious, military, and political figures, including Ayatollah Khamenei. The successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, has reportedly been injured and has not been seen in public since the war’s early stages. The conflict has led to a spike in food prices in Iran, with rice and beef costs soaring. The International Monetary Fund predicts a sharp decline in Iran’s GDP this year.

Apart from the financial implications of Operation Epic Fury, the war has affected the U.S. in terms of public opinion, fuel prices, and strained relationships with global allies. Trump’s actions have been criticized for increasing instability and costs globally.

Democrats have demanded more transparency regarding the war’s expenses. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth disclosed that the military had spent $37.5 billion on the conflict, but critics argue this figure underestimates the actual costs. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called for an end to the war and better allocation of taxpayer funds.

While few Republicans have opposed the war, Rep. Thomas Massie has criticized the military strategy and called for adherence to the War Powers Act. Trump’s reluctance to engage in negotiations with Iran contrasts with his previous stance on reaching a deal to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Reports suggest that U.S. embassy staff in the Middle East may return to their posts, marking a potential shift in diplomatic engagement. A former U.S. diplomat expressed disappointment in the administration’s handling of the situation, citing missed opportunities for a less costly approach to influencing change in Iran.

With the war reaching the six-month mark, the future remains uncertain, with little optimism for a swift resolution or significant changes in the region.
