“Tugboat” Wilkinson set for MLB pitching debut

Date:

Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson acquired his nickname during his Little League days due to his lack of speed on the bases. Now, after twelve years, Tugboat is making his Major League Baseball pitching debut with the San Francisco Giants, having been promoted from the team’s triple-A affiliate. He is set to start against the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday.

Jeff Duda, Wilkinson’s former coach from Ladner, B.C., received the news of his call-up in a late-night phone call on Sunday. Wilkinson excitedly informed Duda of his promotion, expressing both shock and enthusiasm.

Wilkinson’s talent on the mound was evident at a young age when he led White Rock to the 2015 Canadian Little League title and struck out 16 batters in the Little League World Series. Recently, he showcased his skills at the World Baseball Classic, pitching impressively against formidable hitters.

Despite not fitting the traditional mold of a pitcher at 6-1 and 250 pounds, Wilkinson’s determination and competitive spirit set him apart. His coach praised his work ethic and continuous improvement, highlighting his commitment to physical conditioning each offseason.

Drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in 2023, Wilkinson was traded to the Giants in May. In the current season, he has recorded impressive stats in the minor leagues, with 96 strikeouts in 90 innings and a 3.40 ERA in 20 starts. Fans in Canada are eagerly anticipating his debut in the major leagues, recognizing his talent and strong presence on the field.

Jordan Broatch, director of baseball operations at White Rock South Surrey Baseball Association, commended Wilkinson’s ability and expressed excitement about his progression to the highest level of the sport. Duda also praised Wilkinson’s determination, stating that he always believed in his potential to reach the big leagues.
